TERM PAPER RESEARCH PATHFINDER
This document will assist you in finding information for you term paper. It will give you a path to follow which will help you find a variety of information sources available in our library and online through the library’s home page. Don’t hesitate to ask for help in using any of the sources of information listed.
1.Choosing a topic: Need help finding a topic. Try this site at OLD DOMINION.
2.General Encyclopedias: Go to a general encyclopedia for an overview of your topic from a reliable source. This will give you a simple understanding of a topic without too much detail. It will give you the “who”, “what”, “where”, “when” and “why” of your topic, possible organization of the information and keywords for your searches.
3.Specialized Encyclopedias: Specialized encyclopedias will give you more detailed information about a topic. Use the card catalog to access titles.
4.Reference Books: Reference Books on specific topics are also available. They will be listed in the online catalog under your topic.
5.Library’s Online Catalog: The Library’s Online Catalog will be found on the library’s web site. Do not feel limited by our collection. If you do not find a book on your topic, please check the Statewide Library Catalog. It shows the holdings of many libraries throughout the state. With enough lead time we should be able to interlibrary loan most titles.
ONLINE DATABASES: The library has access to many online databases. All are available through the library’s home page. Please ask a librarian for assistance if you want help using the databases. Information found in these databases can be printed, saved, or e-mailed.
1.MARVEL: Thousands of magazines, newspapers, and reference books are available through the online resources of MARVEL!, Maine’s Virtual Library. Start by using the “TEEN RESOURCES” link that is to the right on the page just above the “KIDS!” section.
2.PROQUEST DATABASES: Should you need passwords for these databases, see a librarian. You should have access at school without a password. You will need the logon and password to access these at home.
E-Library is a student friendly database that will give you full text articles from
newspapers, magazines, books, maps, pictures, audiovisuals, and TV/radio transcripts.
Proquest Learning Literature offers a variety of information on authors, literary
criticisms, reference books, multimedia and literary works.
Proquest History Study Center is a collection of primary and secondary sources on
global history from ancient times to the present day.
Sirs Decades features 5,000 + hand selected primary and secondary source articles that
highlight key events, movements, people and places in the 20th Century.
